Sizing

How to read a size

Every piece is listed with its exact dimensions — centimetres, feet and square metres. This page is how to use them.

The numbers

Dimensions are given width by length, to the nearest centimetre, with the area in square metres. The same figures are printed in feet and inches for readers who furnish in them, and the shop shows whichever system your country uses.

Handwoven rugs are irregular by nature; a small variation is inherent to the object rather than a defect.

In a seating room

Measure the seating group, not the room. A rug wants at least the front feet of the seating standing on it.

A tape measure on the floor is the surest test: mark the width and the length where the rug will lie, and live with that outline for a day before you decide.

Dining rooms and bedrooms

Under a dining table, allow for the chairs drawn back — the rug should hold them even when someone stands up. Beside or under a bed, let the rug run out where feet actually land.

Between sizes

Every piece is a single object, so the one listed is the size it is. The drawing is not — the same one is often woven at other sizes. If nothing listed fits the spot, ask, and we will tell you what exists or have one made.

The register, by post

New entries, and the notes that go with them.

One note a week: new entries as they are catalogued, with their photographs. Nothing else.
